World Equestrian Brands: Scurry Driving at Hickstead

Ride along with the great Gareth Roberts and his speedy ponies Darkhorse Fred and Barney!

The Celebrity Scurry event at Hickstead in Great Britain never ceases to amuse, and this year Equestrian.com’s Nigel Meadowcroft partnered with Gareth Roberts to ultimately win the event. If you’ve never seen a scurry race before, well …

Hang on tight, because here we go!

World Equestrian Brands Drone Cam: Spirits Bay Horses

Today’s Wednesday Drone Cam takes us to a remote bay in New Zealand, home to some wild horses!

New Zealand’s Spirits Bay was believed by the Maori to be a place where spirits of the dead gathered before departing the world for their ancestral home. It’s now become a popular tourist destination, though it’s managed to avoid a lot of development and has stayed fairly wild.

The hills above Spirits Bay are home to feral horses, descended from stock released in the past two centuries. Lucky visitors to Spirits Bay might catch a glimpse or two of these horses on their visit to the area.

This drone cam gets a closer look at both a small band of wild horses and the beautiful waters and vibrant green hills of Spirits Bay. The filmmaker chose a somewhat sinister soundtrack, trying to capture the sense of mystery and spirituality surrounding the legendary location.

Have you ever been to Spirits Bay and glimpsed the wild horses? Post your story and photos in the comments section!

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Beach Driving

Hey, the beach isn’t just for horseback riding — ride along with this pony and cart doing a beach DRIVE in today’s Helmet Cam!

Sure, our equestrian bucket list might include galloping down the beach with the salt air whipping our hair and our horse’s mane into the wind — but that’s a dream that doesn’t necessarily have to be just for riders! Ride along with “Joy Joy” the pony for a beach trek with her riding stablemates in today’s Helmet Cam:

What a great little pony trotting bravely into the surf! And how much fun this must be, to share a beach experience whether you’re in the saddle or on the driver’s bench.

Go riding — AND driving!

World Equestrian Brands Drone Cam: Icelandic Horses

See Icelandic horses romp in their pasture from a whole new perspective via this drone cam video!

Despite their small stature, Icelandic horses carry themselves like noble chargers. Woe betide you if you call them “ponies” (just ask head editor Leslie Wylie, who found this out the hard way on a trip to Iceland in 2015).

When the Icelandic horse is turned loose to romp about and be simply, well, a horse, it’s easy to forget without a human standing next to them for perspective that they’re rather petite. This drone video lets the Icelandic horse take center stage in its own performance, moving at liberty about a paddock and looking every inch a noble steed.

Go Icelandic horses! And go riding.

World Equestrian Brands Girth Cam

Here’s an unusual perspective: check out this video, filmed from a rear-facing camera attached to the girth!

Yes, this point of view does make the horse’s hinds look like a pair of running chicken legs, and yes, you may feel slightly nauseous until you adjust to this perspective … but once you get those new sensations out of the way, this is a pretty cool angle to watch! Hang on for the ride as this horse and rider trot and canter over a few jumps.

Definitely something different to start off your Wednesday!

World Equestrian Brands Drone Cam: Nyquist Workout

While we won’t be able to catch a Nyquist/Exaggerator rematch in the Belmont, we can still watch champion Nyquist burn up the track via this drone video!

While Nyquist may not have been the best horse on Saturday for the Preakness Stakes, there’s no denying that he’s still every inch a champion, and he trains like one too. Watch one of Nyquist’s morning works before the Preakness on a damp morning as the bay son of Uncle Mo tears up Pimlico — even the drone has a hard time keeping up with him!

Unfortunately for Nyquist fans, the bay colt will not be heading to the Belmont for a much-anticipated rematch with Exaggerator — he spiked a fever on Monday and blood work came back on Tuesday showing an elevated white blood cell count, suggesting illness. Nyquist will be placed on stronger antibiotics and when he’s well, he’ll return to his home base in California to rest and recuperate. Team Nyquist has suggested that the colt will point towards a few of the summer stakes for his next target.

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Camargue Herd

Ride along for an exhilarating drive of the iconic white Camargue horses through the brush!

Who hasn’t fantasized about galloping down a wild trail on the back of a snow-white steed, listening to the thunder of hoofbeats as other horses run freely around you? Thanks to a helmet cam video, you can now get at least one step closer to making that dream a reality — ride along for this exhilarating drive of a herd of Camargue horses in France!

(Note: must be logged into Facebook to view.)

The Camargue is the iconic breed of southern France, often photographed in the marshes where their gray coats stand out among their background. Contrary to popular belief, the Camargue herds aren’t truly wild but have semi-feral status, with a registry helping to organize the breed. Horses to be registered in the main studbook must have been born outside in one of the recognized semi-feral herds from a registered dam.

Camargue horses are popular mounts in southern France for livestock herders, and are also becoming increasingly popular as sporthorse mounts.

World Equestrian Brands HC: Elisa Wallace’s Rolex XC

According to our sister site Eventing Nation, Rolex hangover is a legitimate medical condition. We’re here to help with a little helmet cam cross-country video from Elisa Wallace.

Another Rolex has come and gone, leaving equestrians all over the country nursing their Rolex hangover. There are no more rider standings to update; there’s no more live stream to watch; all of those carefully-collected stats have been laid to rest until next April.

But don’t worry, eventing fans — there are plenty of videos to help you relive the magic that was the Best Weekend All Year. Elisa Wallace never fails to deliver, whether we’re talking about her stellar eighth-place performance in Kentucky last weekend or her always-entertaining helmet cam videos that give us the rider’s-eye-view of the course.

For the vast majority of us that will never gallop around a four-star, hold on tight: it’s time for another wild ride aboard Simply Priceless. (Excuse the rain spots — it was another soggy cross-country day this year!)

“Go Johnny go!” As Wallace states as she crosses the finish line, “that was hard! We both got tired.” (I got tired just watching, let alone riding that hard at a sustained steady pace in challenging conditions over jumps the size of my house.)

Go Johnny! Go Elisa! And go riding!

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Percheron XC

Percherons wouldn’t normally be good event horses … but this isn’t a normal Percheron! Ride along on the Plantation Fields Novice cross-country course aboard “Klein.”

Draft horses are most commonly seen pulling carriages and wagons; they can make great riding horses but very few have the athletic build and drive to be an event horse. “Klein” is one of these rare individuals, a more refined Percheron than other members of her breed better suited to more typical draft horse uses.

Climb aboard Klein and go for a spin around Plantation Field’s Novice cross-country course!

From the rider’s perspective, you might not guess you’re riding a Percheron. We’re loving “The Flying Percheron” blog, which chronicles the long and patient process of training a draft horse eventer — check it out here.

Go Percherons! Go riding!

World Equestrian Brands HC: Sidesaddle Steeplechase

Move over eventers: these ladies have a lock on “most crazy awesome ridiculous thing done on a horse.”

Sunday saw the return of the second annual “Mrs. George C. Everhart Memorial Invitational Side Saddle Chase”, the first side saddle race in the United States. It did not disappoint. These brave women made several jumping efforts over a vast green course on the Oatlands Plantation in Leesburg, Virginia over the weekend, to the thrill of the local crowd.

(Note: must be logged into Facebook to view, or you can see the video by clicking here. Click the Facebook “f” in the corner if the video is not playing for you.)

Perhaps most delightful and admirable of all, after showing their fortitude and pluck in the heart-stopping event, all the ladies demonstrate the most ladylike sportsmanship at the finish line by shaking hands and congratulating each other on a safe and successful event for all the participants.

The race organizers were Maggie Johnston and Devon Zebrovious, who decided to develop the event after meeting British sidesaddle racing organizer Philippa Holland in 2013. Holland runs the Dianas of the Chase Race, which was previously the only sidesaddle steeplechase in the world. The event quickly became beloved and iconic, even inspiring a scene in the PBS period drama, Downton Abbey.

The video was shot by Middleburg Photo, and you can see many more fabulous photos of the race (and more moments from The Loudon Races) on their website. You can also follow the race on Facebook.

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Motor Cowboy

Reader Matt Lakin did some quick thinking and careful driving to safely herd this loose horse off a highway and into a pasture!

Reader Matt Lakin of Shropshire in the UK casually writes, “I managed to roundup this escaped horse […] I thought you may want to use the footage?”

According to Matt, “the horse was running towards a very busy road at rush hour and was only a few hundred yards from where another horse was killed in January seriously injuring the driver.”

Thanks to some quick thinking and very careful driving and on Matt’s part, he was able to pass the loose horse and then cut him off, effectively herding him into a pasture and off of the dangerous roadway. Check out the video (must be logged in to Facebook to view):

Well done, Matt! We salute you for your public service in keeping the roads safe and the horses safer.

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Blooper Reel

We love those helmet cams in which a beautiful ride looks effortless and fun. But as we all know, for every perfect trip there are plenty of blooper moments.

Hey, nobody’s perfect, and it takes a brave soul to record all of those imperfect moments and put them on YouTube for the world to see — but that’s exactly what user PonyCam did! Ride along and see how many of these moments look familiar to you:

Try and try again! Check out the rest of PonyCam’s YouTube channel for more videos, including plenty of successful rides.

World Equestrian Brands Drone Cam: Snow Training

We’re heading back to Norway to watch racehorse train on beautiful groomed snow gallop paths!

Last year we shared a popular drone came video from the same producer on the same Norwegian racehorse farm: whether you’re just coming into spring’s warmth or you’re in a location where it’s been warm all along, this sequel video portrays winter as a beautiful time to go for a gallop!

We love how these galloping and trotting racehorses take everything in stride, from the snow and likely cold to the drone buzzing overhead. We’re happy to watch videos from this winter wonderland all day long!

World Equestrian Brands Helmet Cam: Mounted Archery

Practice makes perfect! Check out the rider’s point of view for this mounted archery practice session.

Mounted archery is a rapidly-growing equestrian sport all around the world, letting riders of all skill levels discover their inner warrior and precision skills. As you might imagine, it’s a discipline that requires plenty of practice — let’s mount up and ride a practice session aboard Lindsay the Haflinger!

Our rider is a pretty good shot! This practice session was made even more difficult by riding bareback — we’re definitely impressed!

Go mounted archery! Go riding!
