SpectraVET Classic Performance of the Week

In celebration of Belmont Stakes week, relive one of the most iconic, dominating performances in American horse racing history with Secretariat’s 1973 victory.

I’m a sucker for the drama of horse racing to begin with, but watching replays of this particular race never fails to raise goosebumps on my arms and start tears in my eyes. There’s not much else to be said about this race, quite possibly one of the greatest moments in the sport, so I’ll let race caller Chic Anderson take over from here:

They’re on the turn, and Secretariat is blazing along! The first three-quarters of a mile in 1:09 and four fifths. Secretariat is widening now! He is moving like a tremendous machine! Secretariat by twelve, Secretariat by fourteen lengths on the turn! Sham is dropping back. It looks like they’ll catch him today, as My Gallant and Twice a Prince are both coming up to him now. But Secretariat is all alone! He’s out there almost a sixteenth of a mile away from the rest of the horses! Secretariat is in a position that seems impossible to catch. He’s into the stretch. Secretariat leads this field by 18 lengths, and now Twice a Prince has taken second and My Gallant has moved back to third. They’re in the stretch. Secretariat has opened a 22 length lead! He is going to be the Triple Crown winner! Here comes Secretariat to the wire. An unbelievable, an amazing performance! He hits the finish 25 lengths in front!

Go Secretariat.

SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Lucy Deslauriers

The R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship was everything you would hope such a class would be. It had thrills, drama, heartbreak, and triumph, and best of all, it was only eight riders!

The Championship brought back all the winners of the equitation classes yesterday and today to face off for ultimate horsemanship, and powerhouse equitation queen Lucy Deslauriers again reigns proud from her throne. The winner of yesterday’s WIHS Equitation Group C class was in foot perfect form this afternoon, and her vivid gray Class Action didn’t set a foot wrong in the final test.

The judges opted not to bring back any riders for a final test, instead placing the class after the eight jumping rounds.

Reserve Champion went to Daisy Farrish, who also had a beautiful round as her lovely (also) gray snapped his knees with elegance and momentum to each of the twelve jumping efforts.

The final course was no walk in the Dixon Oval, as there were some tricky lines, a solid rollback, a double combination, and various twists and turns. The #6 fence set at the far side of the course after the double combination required a pretty hard left turn and many horses and riders struggled to read it as a tight five-stride or a long four. The riders who attempted the long four either had to hang on for dear life from a long spot, and more than one chipped in a fifth at the last minute for an awkward jump. Both Lucy, Daisy, and third place finisher Madison Goetzmann managed to rein in their horses’ strides and make the fence in a short and tidy five.

The heartbreaker of the round was T.J. O’Mara, who won his division of the Maclay this morning but had a runout going into the double combination, to the spectators’ disappointment. He looked to be having a spectacular round up to that moment.

The full order of finish is below, and we’ll be bringing you more action in the hunter and jumper divisions as the week at Devon continues! Go Jumping.

SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Chester Weber

Chester Weber and his four-in-hand traveled to the Royal Windsor Horse Show last week to defend their championship title!

While Chester Weber and his exquisite team ultimately finished fifth, with the championship title going to Boyd Exell of Australia (based in Holland), his performance is nevertheless impressive. Combined driving is akin to eventing for carriage drivers, and if you thought trying to juggle three different phases with one horse was challenging, the fact that these drivers can handle it with four and a carriage is mind-blowing!

The Royal Windsor Horse Show draws international competition each spring to England for endurance, driving and show jumping, as well as plenty of national-level horse showing as well. Mr. Weber won the combined driving four-in-hand competition in 2014 and 2015.

SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Rolex Classic

In honor of this week’s Rolex Kentucky Three-Day Event, we’re revisiting this classic performance from a pair of fan favorites!

Who doesn’t love watching old videos of Karen O’Connor and her “Super Pony” Theodore O’Connor kicking tail and taking names over a four-star event? We’re rolling back to 2007, when O’Connor and “Teddy,” a Thoroughbred/Arabian/Shetland pony standing at 14.1 and three-quarters hands, held their own to take third place at Rolex.

Teddy’s strong suit was truly on cross-country: who doesn’t feel uplifted watching this literal pony working his heart out to lay it down just like horses several hands taller?

And this video from the show jumping phase is aptly named: hold your breath, and then lose your mind with the rest of the crowd.

There’s nothing quite like the emotional roller-coaster that is Rolex. Our sister site Eventing Nation is reporting live from Rolex all weekend long, so keep it locked for updates, play-by-plays and plenty of behind-the-scenes fun!

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Nyquist vs. Mohaymen

One of the biggest Derby prep races of the spring became a highly-anticipated match race when two undefeated favorites, Nyquist and Mohaymen, went head-to-head in the Florida Derby!

Before the race, it would have been difficult for anyone to call a winner in the Grade I Florida Derby at Gulfstream Park: while Mohaymen was a slight favorite over Nyquist, both three-year-old colts were coming into the gate undefeated, the threat of one or the other (or potentially both) being forced to walk away tarnished looming heavy.

Mohaymen had gone five for five prior to the Florida Derby, including big wins this year in the Holy Bull and the Fountain of Youth. He topped one of the future wager pools for the Kentucky Derby after his dominating performance in the Fountain of Youth. Nyquist, darling of the west coast, arrived in Florida a decorated juvenile champion with a record of six wins in six starts. The Florida Derby, for all intents and purposes, had become a match race between these two.

The undefeated favorites loaded into the starting gate with eight other contenders and the race was on.

While Nyquist undeniably drifted in the stretch after stringing the rest of the field including Mohaymen wide in the turn for home, his streak remains intact. Nyquist now tops the future wager pool for the Derby but Mohaymen still shouldn’t be totally written off just yet, despite his failure to fire in Florida.

The road to the 2016 Kentucky Derby never fails into include numerous twists and turns, so we’ll be following the next round of prep races eagerly to see who rises to the top! For updated Derby news and standings, check out the race website. We’ll also be bringing you our 2o16 Derby Watch soon.

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Kelley Farmer Sweeps Top 3

What’s better than winning the $100,000 International Hunter Derby at HITS Desert Circuit? Sweeping the top 3! Watch Kelley Farmer’s first-, second- and third-place rides.

Arguably, no one had a better weekend than Kelley Farmer in Thermal, California: her toughest competition in the $100,000 International Hunter Derby was herself, as she captured not only the win but second and third place as well! Let’s take a look at her second-round handy rides, starting with third place and working our way up.

Third place: Mindful, owned by Kensel LLC. Farmer and Mindful recently won the International Hunter Derby at HITS Ocala.

Second place: Publicized, owned by Amanda Hone. Now, personally I’m a sucker for a big, beautiful dapple-gray hunter, so I would have pinned this pair first — but that’s just me. I’m content to just sit here and covet this lovely animal.

First place: Baltimore, owned by Jane Gaston. Baltimore notched his first Derby win just a few weeks ago at Gulf Coast — he’ll definitely be one to watch this year!

Well done, Kelley Farmer! Our congratulations to the connections of these three talented hunters!

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Madison & Takoda

Check out this “colorful” performance from the Extreme Mustang Makeover in Louisiana, held March 11-12! Madison Shambaugh and Takoda won the freestyle and were named overall reserve champions.

“Why fit in when you were born to stand out?” -Dr Seuss Here are some photos from Takoda’s very colorful freestyle at the 2016 LA Extreme Mustang Makeover just 100 days out of the wild (video coming soon)! I could not have asked for any more from him tonight– He was extraordinary. Our performance tonight was about embracing your individuality and finding the strength to show who you really are and what makes you unique–showing your TRUE COLORS! It was about embracing what makes you different…because this is what defines your true beauty! Our freestyle received a nearly perfect score & we were awarded overall Reserve Champions. With the money we won I was able to buy Takoda back at the adoption. It is safe to say Takoda is officially apart of my team!!! I am so excited for this mustang’s future…our journey is far from over;) He will have a few weeks of good rest time from riding as I finish up with school. Then we will begin training for the freestyle reining at the 2016 American Quarter Horse Congress in October. I am very excited for the potential to raise awareness for the mustangs at such a prestigious event and show the world what they are capable of! I’d like to say a very sincere thank you to all my family, friends, and followers for your support along this journey! I could NOT have done it without you! Also a special thanks to: Crypto Aero for providing top notch nutrition. Rosebud Ranch in Brookston, IN for sharing their awesome facilities with Takoda & I, as well as their generous contributions. Motion For Life for helping Takoda feel his best. & The Glam Factory for helping to provide the perfect costume! Madison Shambaugh and Takoda put on quite a show at the Extreme Mustang Makeover of Gonzales, Louisiana last weekend: this performance earned them the victory in the freestyle segment of the competition and won them the reserve championship as well. The Extreme Mustang Makeover competition requires competitors to take on an untouched mustang through a Bureau of Land Management adoption. In 100 days, the mustangs need to be competition-ready to perform both under saddle and in hand, with the top ten performances at the Makeover competition qualifying for the freestyle. Shambaugh’s performance was intended to celebrate the individual nature of the horse, highlighting the fact horses should be trained according to their unique personalities, strengths and weaknesses.

2016 Extreme Mustang Makeover Bridleless FreestyleMeet Mustang No. 6042, now known as “Takoda,” who was wild just 100 days ago. Madison trained Takoda for the Extreme Mustang Makeover, in which trainers have 100 days to train a wild mustang. These competitions serve to showcase the trainability of America’s wild horses and raise awareness for the some 50,000 mustangs currently waiting in holding pens to be adopted. After the competition, the trained mustangs are auctioned off to the public to be put into caring homes. Madison used the money she won in the competition to bid on Takoda herself. She was successful in adopting him and will be giving him a forever home. She plans to travel with Takoda & the other mustangs she has trained in order to continue to raise awareness for the mustangs still awaiting adoption, as well as to educate the public on equine behavior and communication techniques to achieve more successful horse-human relationships.Their very colorful performance served to communicate a message about embracing your individuality and finding the strength to show who you really are and what makes you unique–showing your true colors! It was about embracing what makes you different, recognizing that our individual differences is what brings out our true beauty!Madison was inspired to convey this message after realizing and appreciating how different and unique each mustang that she works with is. She believes every horse has a potential for greatness if we can learn to appreciate their unique gifts and embrace what makes them so special, rather than fitting them into our preconceived perceptions of what they should be.Special thanks to Crypto Aero Wholefood Horse Feed, Motion for Life, Rosebud Ranch, & The Glam Factory.#DifferentIsBeautiful #TrueColors Posted by Madison Shambaugh on Sunday, March 13, 2016

Keep in mind that this horse was totally untouched 100 days prior:

Each Extreme Mustang Makeover concludes with an auction so each mustang can find a forever home. Shambaugh used her winnings to buy back Takoda to permanently join her string. While also maintaining a schedule as a college student, Madison Shambaugh also teaches liberty clinics as well as performs with her horses.

Madison Shambaugh first appeared on the mustang radar with last year’s Virginia Extreme Mustang Makeover, where she performed with her mustang Terk. Clearly the sky is the limit for this young trainer!

SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Bareback/Bridleless Cutting

Zach Combs turned heads at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo in late February when he demonstrated the art of cutting … without a saddle or bridle.

Cutting is one of those disciplines that showcases a horse’s raw talent, the innate ability of a stock horse to read cattle and move with them. It’s an intense feat of athleticism, both for the horse, who is rolling low over his hocks and crouching to give a cow “the eye,” and for the rider, whose job is to make it look like he or she is not doing anything at all while he or she literally hangs on for dear life. Yes, cutting — where you will see the biggest most manly-looking cowboy with a death grip on the saddle horn.

So when a horse and rider amble up to the herd with naught but a lead rope around the horse’s neck, naturally it gets our attention. Watch Zach Combs ride bareback and bridleless to the herd! (Note: must be logged in to Facebook to view.)

Ride ‘Em Cowboy . . . . . Zach Combs put on quite a show at the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo during the World Series. This man not only rode to the herd Bridleless, he was bareback. What a show!
