SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Lucy Deslauriers
The R.W. “Ronnie” Mutch Equitation Championship was everything you would hope such a class would be. It had thrills, drama, heartbreak, and triumph, and best of all, it was only eight riders!
The Championship brought back all the winners of the equitation classes yesterday and today to face off for ultimate horsemanship, and powerhouse equitation queen Lucy Deslauriers again reigns proud from her throne. The winner of yesterday’s WIHS Equitation Group C class was in foot perfect form this afternoon, and her vivid gray Class Action didn’t set a foot wrong in the final test.
The judges opted not to bring back any riders for a final test, instead placing the class after the eight jumping rounds.
Reserve Champion went to Daisy Farrish, who also had a beautiful round as her lovely (also) gray snapped his knees with elegance and momentum to each of the twelve jumping efforts.
The final course was no walk in the Dixon Oval, as there were some tricky lines, a solid rollback, a double combination, and various twists and turns. The #6 fence set at the far side of the course after the double combination required a pretty hard left turn and many horses and riders struggled to read it as a tight five-stride or a long four. The riders who attempted the long four either had to hang on for dear life from a long spot, and more than one chipped in a fifth at the last minute for an awkward jump. Both Lucy, Daisy, and third place finisher Madison Goetzmann managed to rein in their horses’ strides and make the fence in a short and tidy five.
The heartbreaker of the round was T.J. O’Mara, who won his division of the Maclay this morning but had a runout going into the double combination, to the spectators’ disappointment. He looked to be having a spectacular round up to that moment.
The full order of finish is below, and we’ll be bringing you more action in the hunter and jumper divisions as the week at Devon continues! Go Jumping.
