Standing Ovation by Ovation Riding: Habitat for Horses, Inc.
Each Friday, HN teams up with Ovation Riding to spotlight an individual or organization doing good work in the horse world. Today we recognize Habitat for Horses, Inc.
Today’s honoree:
Habitat for Horses
Habitat for Horses is a non-profit horse rescue and sanctuary, located in Hitchcock, Texas with a new location also open in Manvel.
Habitat for Horses’ mission statement:
The purpose of Habitat for Horses Inc. is a) To promote and secure the safety, well being and health of horses. b) To encourage education concerning the physical and mental health of horses. c) To utilize horses in the growth and mental health of humans, either adult or children, through education, demonstration and connection. d) To study, promote, and enhance the proper training of horses through positive training techniques. e) To provide a home for those horses who are no longer able to be productive. f) To return to health, if possible, those owned horses that are deemed sick or injured.
Habitat for Horses recently caught this adorable footage of a rescued horse and donkey romping around in the pasture together. Ashton, the spirited paint in the video is available for adoption while Job, the rambunctious donkey, has recently found a loving home! This footage was taken at the rescue’s Manvel property where rehabilitated horses are brought to receive top notch care and work with a trainer before going on to new homes.
With over 400 rescued horses kept on 5 separate properties, there is never a dull moment at this rescue! And, with so many horses, the staff certainly know a thing or two about how to keep horses happy. At this rescue, horses have the opportunity to build friendships with other rescued horses and live in a healthy environment while they await their forever homes. In the meantime, volunteers and staff have the chance to witness the fruits of their labor: happy, healthy horses (and donkeys) enjoying a afternoon together out in the pasture.
However, the ultimate reward, according to founder Jerry Finch, “is a healthy horse, restored physically and mentally, leaving to a new home and a new life”.
For more information about Habitat for Horses, we encourage readers to visit the rescue’s website. Readers can also “like” Habitat for Horses on Facebook for more photos and updates.
Amber Barnes is the founder of Good Nature Consulting and consults for animal rescue and welfare organizations on a variety of projects by providing research, media and fieldwork services. She happily assists Habitat for Horses, by spreading the word about the beautiful and lovable rescue horses available for adoption through videography, photography and media management services.
