6 Ways to Stay Warm This Winter on a Wal-Mart Budget

It’s that time a year again: our feet go numb even before the sun is down…at 4 o’clock in the afternoon. I admit it: I love the cold weather, I love riding in the fallen leaves, and I LOVE riding in the snow, but I do not love being so cold that I can’t feel my fingers and toes. My nose snot freezes into little things that resemble stalactites hanging from cave ceilings. No bueno.
Thankfully, Walmart carries a variety of products to keep you comfortable, warm, and snot-free in the cold months. On a budget? Check out this list and stay warm all winter long.
1. Insulated Overalls. The Wall’s brand is just as good as Carhartt’s, but about half the price. Perfect for riding in the saddle, riding bareback, or doing barn chores. These bad boys keep you super warm. The legs have zippers, so you can put them on easily over your whole outfit, boots included.
2. Mr. Heater, aka Mr. Buddy, aka Mr. Miami (as my friend calls him, since he’ll keep you feeling so warm you will think you’re laying on a beach in Miami). This amazing invention runs off a little bottle of propane. Mr. Buddy is great for keeping your tack room warm and your horse trailer warm. Shoot, I bring him with me everywhere I go in the cold months: he sits in front of me at breakfast, when I’m watching TV, when I’m camping with friends, etc. I’ve had my Buddy Heater for 8 years and he’s still going strong. Trust me, it will be one of the best things you will ever buy!
3. Hot Hands. I always have these in my gloves and boots. I buy them by the box-load. Love, love, love them!
4. Men’s Faded Glory flannel shirts. You can look like an L.L. Bean model on a bum’s salary. I know they’re men’s shirts, but just buy a small or medium and you’ll be fine. For $7.88, they keep you warm, they come in a variety of colors, and they are super durable.
5. Handkerchiefs. Found in the ladies’ accessory isle, for a $1 a piece, I buy enough to last me for a week. They come in all different colors to match your outfits. They work great for runny noses. They also can be tied around your neck to keep your neck warm, pulled up over your nose to keep the chill off and to look like a bandit, and last but not least, they make great tourniquets for horse or human leg/arm injuries.
6. Stanley Thermos. Keeps coffee and soup hot for hours. Great for the saddle bags on those cold riding days!
