SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Waylon Roberts, Indoor Eventing

Indoor eventing is an action-packed, arena-bound hybrid of cross country and show jumping. Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair just hosted its annual challenge — check out the winning ride!

Toronto’s Royal Agricultural Winter Fair is taking place right now, drawing top equestrian talent from all over the world in show jumping, hunters, dressage and driving, as well as a breed show and North America’s top-notch six-horse draft hitches. One of the more unique competitions featured as part of the Royal Fair (as it’s known) is the Horseware Indoor Eventing Challenge, which blends cross-country with a stadium round and brings the solid obstacles to the indoor arena.

While indoor eventing doesn’t yet enjoy the same widespread popularity as the traditional outdoor event, fans of the hybrid discipline are growing. Indoor events seem most popular in Europe, though it’s gaining a foothold in the US (such as the Pacific Indoor Eventing Series). The Toronto Royal Fair indoor event is perhaps the most high-profile event of its kind, and Canada’s Waylon Roberts won a record-setting eighth indoor challenge on Saturday night, November 7, 2015.

It takes a handy horse to tackle an indoor eventing course, and West River looks like the perfect mount! Runners-up to Roberts and the mare West River were Buck Davidson on Wundermaske in the reserve position and Holly Jacks-Smither on Dynamo in third.
