Standing Ovation by Ovation Riding: Purina with A Home For Every Horse
Every Friday, HN teams up with Ovation Riding to spotlight an individual or organization doing good work in the horse world. Today, we salute Purina in its partnership with A Home For Every Horse.
This week’s honoree:
Purina with A Home For Every Horse
A Home For Every Horse is devoted making connections between horse rescues and shelter and the potential adopters seeking a lifelong companion. Purina has partnered with A Home For Every Horse in an effort to give back to the equine community and help find forever homes for deserving equines.
How long have Purina and the A Home For Every Horse program worked together?
Purina and AHFEH began their relationship in 2012 when Purina became the program’s feed sponsor. Since then, Purina has supported the program by donating free feed to rescue shelters and providing more visibility through its social and marketing channels.
In what ways do Purina and AHFEH collaborate to help horses?
AHFEH is a program operated by Active Interest Media (AIM). AIM manages a growing list of rescue shelters, and works to connect horses at these shelters with “forever homes.” Many equine rescue shelters struggle to give adoptable horses the resources they need to thrive, including veterinary care, shelter, training and proper nutrition. A Home for Every Horse helps these rescue shelters meet the demands of fostering and rehabilitating rescue horses by providing assistance and much-needed nutrition. Purina understands that proper nutrition is important in horse rehabilitation and, as the sole feed sponsor of the program, provides feed and educational resources to aid in bringing them back to good health. Every year the company pledges up to $150,000 is free feed to participating rescue shelters.
Do you have an estimate for how many horses have been assisted through Purina’s efforts, or a figure that gives us an idea of the scale?
The program builds on the success of previous years, which has seen nearly 500 rescue shelters throughout the country register to receive support. To date, Purina has donated more than 600 tons of feed to rescue shelters.
How can horse owners help Purina help horses?
Purina has pledged a donation of $125,000 in feed, and through September 5, 2015, horse owners and enthusiasts can rescue shelters by spreading the news and sharing their own stories. Purina will donate an additional $1 in free feed when fans share through HelpFeedRescueHorses.com, or Like or Share campaign-related posts on Purina’s Facebook page. Additionally, fans can share their stories of adoption or bringing malnourished horses back to good health. Each story shared on Purina’s Facebook page will tally an additional $25 in free feed to the campaign. Through these efforts, Purina will donate up to an additional $25,000.
Interested horse lovers can also provide a rescue horse a forever home. Horses available for adoption can be found on Equine.com.
In what other ways is Purina dedicated to helping horses?
Improving animal nutrition is at the heart of all we do and, as horse owners ourselves, we understand the importance of healthy, happy horses. At the Purina Animal Nutrition Center, we’re constantly learning, testing and optimizing our feed. Recently our team brought in several retired thoroughbreds from the racetrack and rescue organizations in Oklahoma to live on our farm as part of our exercise physiology program. Here they run on our horse treadmill and eat like kings, showing that there are opportunities to give thoroughbreds a life after racing. Finding ways to give second chances to these horses is an industry-wide issue, and this is just one more way Purina demonstrates its dedication to helping the equine community.
