Oh $h!t: Your most humiliating moments, captured on film

Here at Horse Nation, we encourage readers to take ownership of their thrills as well as their spills. Today’s “Oh $h!t” moment is brought to you by reader Sara Fogelberg.

Sara writes: “After taking a year off from riding, I decided I couldn’t stay away any longer and got the ride on this then 4 year old mare Joey from a fabulous woman at the barn I was lessoning at. This was our first clinic together in the Junior Developing Rider Program with Becky Holder. Apparently Joey decided I should check out the fence a little closer before she went over it!  After spitting the sand out of my mouth I got back on and we got over the fence our second time around!”

Sara, an old trainer of mine had this turn of phrase, “You’ve got to make him a believer.” What he meant was, when you point a horse at a jump, he’s got to trust you completely that if you say he can jump it, he can jump it. He’s gotta be drinking the Kool-Aid, you know what I mean? It sounds like your horse had a brief non-believer moment, but you gave him a big boost of confidence when you got right back on and said once more, with conviction, “We can do this, buddy!” and, this time, he believed you. That’s the spirit, Sara. Keep up the good work.
