WEG History – 1994 Netherlands

The 1994 World Equestrian Games are most known for the resulting financial disaster and organizational problems which, unfortunately, overshadowed the spectacular performances.
Statistics
A total of 37 countries participated.
Jumping 83 participants started (27 countries)
Dressage 61 participants started (23 countries)
Eventing 93 participants started (22 countries)
Driving 44 participants (15 countries)
Endurance 99 participants (23 countries)
Vaulting 76 participants (18 countries)
Countries participating for the first time: Liechtenstein, Romania, South Africa and San Marino
Facts
Germany proved to be a triple-threat, dominating the Jumping, Dressage, and Driving competitions. In Jumping, three German riders made the final four change-of-horse finale. Frank Sloothaak riding San Patrignano Weihaiweg took the Individual Gold. Ludger Beerbaum riding Almox Ratina Z took Silver while Michel Robert of France riding Miss San Patrignano rounded out the podium.

1994 brought a new format to Dressage. There was now a grand prix introduced for the team medals and two separate individual championships, the Grand Prix Special and the Kur to Music. German Isabell Werth on Gigolo FRH won the Grand Prix Special, helping Germany secure the Team Gold medal. America took home team Bronze, while Netherland’s Anky van Grunsven riding Bonfire won the Kur to Music.
In Driving, Michael Freund aided Germany in bringing home both Individual and Team Gold honors.

New Zealand retained their Individual Gold in Eventing with Vaughn Jefferis on Bounce, but lost the team medal to Great Britian. American Dorothy Trapp on Holokai finished 2nd individually.

Once again, America’s only Gold medal would come from the Endurance competition – this time with Valerie Kanavy on Pieraz.

Kerith Lemon on Maxwell 8 would get America its final podium placing, winning Silver in the Vaulting Individual Female category.
