Win, Place, Bird?
You have heard of Kentucky Derby winner Mine That Bird and maybe even Belmont Stakes winner Summer Bird, but this bird doesn’t quite belong in the race!
At Brighton Beach races (in the UK) earlier this week, a seagull flew in and did a handy job of getting up for the show spot, just behind winner Jewelled. Rumor has it he is now the winter book favorite for next year’s Epsom Derby…
The BBC reported, “The bird caused a flap in the 7.10 on Tuesday when ‘swooping for the line’ at the end of a mile-and-a-half race. It is thought to be the first bird to feature in the photo-finish print for a horse race.”
Racecourse spokesman George Hill told the BBC: “We area about a mile-and-a-half from the sea, and there are a lot of seagulls around, but this has never happened before as far as we are aware.
“The bird just happened to be in the right place at the right time.”
