Confession: My Horses Get ‘Hangry’

Hungry and Angry… I’ve been accused of this myself, but for my horses it’s just a way of life.

1) First comes the curious stare. My horses do this from their paddock corners closest to my house/garage/feed room. The look often elicits the comment, “Aww, you’re so cute! Here ya go buddy, take a peppermint.” Feed time: T minus 45 minutes.

2) Then comes the herd disruption, because peppermints only stretch so far. This is when my old, grumpy Quarter Horse gelding starts chomping teeth and pinning ears at the two Thoroughbreds, because they are definitely the reason he hasn’t been fed yet. Feed time: T minus 22 minutes.

3) When they hear the buckets shuffling in the feed room, it’s on like Donkey Kong and the beasties start a drag race up and down the fence lines. Feed time: T minus 8 minutes.

4) Next is what I like to call the “armed escort.” I have finally arrived with those life-sustaining buckets, filled with all that is good in the world, and leading me to the dinner bowl is a very serious business. Feed time: T minus 30 seconds.

5) And then it’s all over…  All the anticipation, all the excitement…  Nothing to do except lick the empty bowl a few hundred times and wait for the next round. Feed time: T minus 12 hours.
