SpectraVET Performance of the Week: California Chrome in the Santa Anita Derby
The Cali-bred chestnut demolished the field on Saturday, winning the $1 million race by 5 1/4 lengths.
California Chrome is trained by Art Sherman who, at age 18, piloted another California-bred chestnut named Swaps to a victory in the 1955 Kentucky Derby. Now, with California Chrome rising up as the early Kentucky Derby favorite, Sherman will be looking for a repeat victory — nearly 60 years later.
The 77-year-old trainer said of California Chrome in a Santa Anita Park press release, “He’s my Swaps. I’m very humbled to have a horse like this.”
Ridden by Victor Espinoza, who who won the 2002 Kentucky Derby aboard War Emblem, California Chrome ran 1 1-8 miles in 1:47.52. He’s won his last four races by a combined 24 1/4 lengths.
“Right now, he’s kind of freaky and I’m enjoying it,” Sherman said. “I can’t believe the races I’ve been seeing.”
