From Olympic Skier to Race Horse Trainer?

Olympic gold medal-winning alpine skier Bode Miller clearly has a need for speed. But his post-Sochi plans may involve a different kind of race.

Bode Miller is the United’s most decorated skier, amassing six Olympic medals spanning four disciplines during his career.

Although this Olympic cycle may be his last, Miller does not plan to slow down anytime soon. The champion athlete recently told USA Today that he was considering making a foray into the Thoroughbred racing industry as a trainer in the near future.

Miller has become close with top trainer Bob Baffert, a relationship that has likely piqued Miller’s interest in the sport. Baffert named his son Bode after watching Miller at the 2002 Olympics in Salt Lake City, and later named a colt Bodemeister, who finished second in the 2012 Kentucky Derbyand Preakness Stakes.

Alongside Baffert’s wife Jill, Miller co-owns a colt named Carving, whose wins included the Real Quiet and C. B. Afflerbaugh Stakes in 2012.

Miller told USA Today,

It’s a really interesting business, lifestyle. I’d love to be a horse trainer at some time. Whether I can break into that business, I don’t know. They are very stingy with their knowledge even guys like Bob (Baffert), you can’t get word out of, but I’m learning.”

He gave this interview to America’s Best Racing:

“It has a lot of parallels to skiing,” he told Page Six, adding, “It’s a fun lifestyle, being around the racetrack.”
