SpectraVET Classic Performance of the Week
Each week we spotlight a history-making moment by an equine legend–like Big Ben’s heart-stopping round in the 1986 Hamburg Derby.
Ben Ben, the 17.3-hand showjumping giant ridden by Canadian Ian Millar, had many accolades to his name. Over his career he won over $1.5 million in prize money, two consecutive World Cup Final titles (1988 in Gothenburg and 1989 in Tampa), Team and Individual Gold medals at the 1987 Pan Am Games, and two top team finishes at the 1984 and 1988 Olympics.
But Ben was perhaps most stunning in Derby classes, with their undulating terrain and difficult obstacles: banks, ditches, solid walls and open rails. With his power, scope and bravery, Ben won the Spruce Meadows Derby six times in eight years: ’86,’87, ’89, ’91, ’92 and ’93.
Here, we have a video of Ben and Ian making short work of the Germany’s Hamburg Derby in 1986.
