Video du Jour: Horse left in starting gate recovers to win race
In the first race of her career, 4-year-old filly Market Quote thrilled spectators at Santa Anita yesterday with an amazing comeback.
Jockey Joe Talamo told the L.A. Times, “Right when the gate opened, I think it scared her. She hesitated. After that, there was nothing else to do but be patient.”
Three seconds late to leave the gate, for the first half of the race Market Quote’s prospects looked dismal. She trailed behind by 10 lengths, then nine, then eight… gradually inching closer toward the field. Finally, turning down the stretch, she switched on the burners.
