News: Oscar Pistorius to race a horse

CNN reports that the South African sprinter, who made history this year by becoming the first amputee to compete in the Olympics, will be racing an Arabian in Quatar tomorrow.

The race is an effort to bring awareness to positive contributions made by people with disabilities.

“Arabian horses [are] an iconic thing of the region,” Pistorius told a press conference. “It is just a very special kind of thing to do. I think it is going to be an amazing spectacle.”

Pistorius isn’t the first Olympian to challenge a horse to a match race. Jesse Owens raced and defeated racehorses over a 100 yard distance, but later revealed that the thoroughbreds he was racing were skittish about the gun at the beginning of the race and thus had bad starts, giving him the advantage.
