$1.25 Million Dollar 2024 Travers Stakes at Saratoga
Dr. Gregory Beroza, aka HorseDoc ‘Talking Horses,’ will be onsite for the 2024 Travers Stakes, which promises to be an historic event. He’s interviewed several racing experts for their opinions. See what they have to say!
The 2024 Travers Stakes, also known as the mid-Summer Derby at Saratoga, promises to be one of the most spectacular Thoroughbred racing performances of the year. It could determine the leading three year old of 2024, in addition to deciding Horse of the Year Eclipse honors. There are four proven superstar contenders, including this year’s extraordinary filly Thorpedo Anna competing against seven colts. All eight of the horses are stakes winners. Thorpedo Anna is given a 5# advantage for racing against the boys. However, a filly hasn’t won the Travers Stakes since 1915, so this could be a historic feat. She would be the eighth filly to win the Travers since its inception in 1864.
The roster of competitors includes proven superstars such as Belmont Stakes and Haskell Winner Dornoch, Jim Dandy Stakes Winner Fierceness, Blue Grass Stakes Winner Sierra Leone, and four other exceptionally talented three-year-old colts.
Any one of these horses is capable of winning. Dornoch is favored; recently, he consecutively won two impressive Grade 1 Stakes in a row. It is rare for a horse to win three Grade 1 Stakes in a row, so such an event unto itself would be historic.
Thorpedo Anna is equally well-decorated, having won three Grade 1 Stakes: the Kentucky Oaks, Acorn, and Coaching Club American Oaks. According to her trainer, Kenny McPeek, she is fit and prepared for the competition.
