T.I.P. presents the August featured Youth Ambassador: Abbie Rummell. Abbie, 15, is from Ohio. Abbie and her Thoroughbred, Lesson in Deceit (Stormy), participate in Jumpers.

How did you start riding?
I was inspired to ride when I was about five years old. My mom had a Paint horse and I used to watch her lessons and show in our local hunter classes. Sometimes after her lessons she would let me ride leadline and lead me around on her horse.

What is your favorite thing about riding/or your horse?
My favorite thing about riding is the partnership I have with my horse. The one thing that I have learned, that I feel is very important, is the way the rider comes into a ride. Stormy in particular responds to new situations the same way his rider does. He has taught me to ride with more confidence and less anxiously. I feel like I can conquer the world when I am riding.

What would you like to do when you are older?
I want to become a Grand Prix Jumper rider and possibly join the Olympic Team.

What do you think the most important aspects of horsemanship are?
Being able to “read” a horse so I can put their needs first no matter what those needs may be.

  I currently have 6 horses – a Warmblood mare, my Thoroughbred, a Quarter Horse, a pony and two miniature horses. We also have four cats, two dogs and two rabbits.

  Purple
• What is your favorite food?
  Chicken Parmesan from Olive Garden
• What is something unique about you?
  Something unique about me is my passion, drive and determination for the jumping industry.
• What is one word that your friends would describe you as?
  Passionate

What is one thing you would like to tell people about Thoroughbreds or the Thoroughbred Incentive Program?
There have been many [Thoroughbreds] that I’ve had the privilege to ride straight off the track that act very calm. They all have such diverse personalities which is one of my favorite things about them, along with their willingness and athletic ability. I’d like to tell people how organized and smoothly run the T.I.P. shows are. They offer so many different classes within the disciplines, which keeps everyone involved.

What are your goals for your horse in 2019?
My goals for Stormy and I were very successfully met. Anyone that knows this particular Thoroughbred knows how complicated he can make certain situations. My goal for him was to compete 2’6”-2’9” locally by summer. He handled the show very well, and we laid down nice courses! Although I have much higher goals for my other horses this season, Stormy completed his, and I’m very proud of him!

The Thoroughbred Incentive Program was created by The Jockey Club to encourage second careers for Thoroughbreds when their racing days are over. The T.I.P. sponsors Thoroughbred-only classes and high point awards as well as Performance Awards, special year-end awards specifically for Thoroughbreds. The T.I.P. also recognizes non-competing Thoroughbreds through its Young Rider program as well as a special award for Thoroughbreds in careers such as therapy horses or other non-profit outlets.
