Meet Rhiannon Williams!

T.I.P. presents June’s featured Youth Ambassador: Rhiannon Williams. Rhiannon, 16, is from Georgia. Rhiannon and her Thoroughbred, Now Daddy’s Broke (Ossi), participate in Hunter, Jumper, Dressage.

How did you start riding?

My mum has ridden since she was a child. My parents bought me my first horse when I was 18 months old (his name was ‘Littlebit’).

What is your favorite thing about riding/or your horse?

I love Ossi’s quirky and animated personality.

What would you like to do when you are older?

I haven’t completely decided, but I’m thinking about being an airline pilot (not that different to riding Ossi!!) or something in the Information Technology sector.

Tell us your favorite quote and why:
I love Winston Churchill’s quote “The outside of a horse is good for the inside of a man” (or woman in my case).

What do you think the most important aspects of horsemanship are?
The care of your horse is the most important. This is why I joined Pony Club, to continue my learning. I hope to take my C2 rating in the next 6 months.

2 horses, 1 dog, 18 cats (mostly barn cats), 5 peacocks and 2 chickens.

What is one thing you would like to tell people about Thoroughbreds or the Thoroughbred Incentive Program?

Thoroughbreds are versatile, hardworking and brave. The Thoroughbred Incentive Program encourages a rewarding life for Thoroughbreds after the track and brings a lot of pleasure to the horse, the rider, and spectators. Most importantly, I would like people to know that the end of a racing career can be just the beginning of another rewarding career for the horse.

What are your goals for your horse in 2019?

To improve my overall Combined Training scores at Novice Level with Ossi. I am also riding a new OTTB called Vegas. The showing season for that starts in March, so I will spend the time between now and then practicing and attending lessons with Vegas to determine the height Vegas and I will compete at this coming show season.

The Thoroughbred Incentive Program was created by The Jockey Club to encourage second careers for Thoroughbreds when their racing days are over. The T.I.P. sponsors Thoroughbred-only classes and high point awards as well as Performance Awards, special year-end awards specifically for Thoroughbreds. The T.I.P. also recognizes non-competing Thoroughbreds through its Young Rider program as well as a special award for Thoroughbreds in careers such as therapy horses or other non-profit outlets.
