T.I.P. presents October’s featured Youth Ambassador: Audrey Newbrey. Audrey, 13, is from Washington. Audrey and her Thoroughbred, Flint, participate in Hunters, Jumpers. Audrey has been a T.I.P. Youth Ambassador now for two years.

How did you start riding?

My mom grew up riding horses and she made sure I started riding by the age of three.

What is your favorite thing about riding/or your horse?

My favorite thing about riding my horse is the thrill of jumping at shows when he has a good round, even when we don’t place.

What would you like to do when you are older?

When I am older I want to continue to retrain Thoroughbreds and support TIP.

Tell us your favorite quote and why:
“The turning point of every life story is the moment we realize we are stronger than we ever imagined” – Secretariat. This is my favorite quote because Thoroughbreds will bring out the best in you and make you develop a grit you never knew you had.

What do you think the most important aspects of horsemanship are?
I think the most important aspects of horsemanship are coming to an understanding of trust with you and your horse. Especially with Thoroughbreds trust is the most important thing you can have. It’s hard to have but sometimes I just have to trust Flint that he will get me over that scary jump.

What is one thing you would like to tell people about Thoroughbreds or the Thoroughbred Incentive Program?

One thing I would like to tell people about Thoroughbreds and T.I.P. is how amazing Thoroughbreds are and how that will always give you an honest ride and 110% effort.

What are your goals for your horse in 2018?

My goals for me and my horse in 2018 are to jump 3’0″, to compete in the Hunter Derby at our local horse show series, and to get better at lead changes.

Is there anything else you would like to tell us?

Almost all of the horses at our barn (minus two) are OTTBs and most of them are amazing schooling horses. At our local shows I have noticed an increased amount of OTTBs and have met with so many people who are interest in them. So many of them have great stories about how they retrained their Thoroughbreds. One is a woman who was an exercise rider, who then eventually bought two horses from a trainer, retrained them to do hunter/jumpers, and now wins the Mini Prix at LWSC every year on them! This year I would like to do more fundraising and awareness events to help boost the amount of OTTB supporters, and provide organizations like CANTER with donations.

The Thoroughbred Incentive Program was created by The Jockey Club to encourage second careers for Thoroughbreds when their racing days are over. The T.I.P. sponsors Thoroughbred-only classes and high point awards as well as Performance Awards, special year-end awards specifically for Thoroughbreds. The T.I.P. also recognizes non-competing Thoroughbreds through its Young Rider program as well as a special award for Thoroughbreds in careers such as therapy horses or other non-profit outlets.
