Fantasy Farm Thursday: A Piece of the Last Wild Frontier

If you’re into that sort of horse life where you stay clean and then go shopping, this one might not be your cup of tea.

This week, we’re stepping away from the East Coast frou frou properties with their marigold steam dispensers in every stall and footing made out of unicorn dust — we’re headed to the wild side of Texas, my friend. Where you eat steak and eggs for breakfast every morning, and fire ants come a-calling. It’s not for the faint of heart (or heart disease – way too much red meat), but if you’re fit and unafraid, there’s ranges to be tamed out there.

The 1,286 acre Meek Ranch sits right on the Pedernales River near Fredricksburg, Texas; it feels spectacularly remote while still being equidistantly close to both San Antonio and Austin (a little more than an hour from both).

The property was first corralled by ranchers back in the 1800s when it was part of historic Morris Ranch, Texas’s earliest massive Thoroughbred breeding operation. When anti-gambling measures around the country sent the Thoroughbred industry into decline around the turn of the 20th century, Morris Ranch was subdivided and sold off for the most part, and the original homestead and township are now a stunning ghost town.

Today, Meek Ranch is a treasure all its own, sporting beautiful fishing grounds in rivers and lakes, typical Texas pecan groves, and of course stunning red barns and workshops.

Two of the barns are historic crown jewels of the property that have their fair share of rustic charm, but might need some restoration to get to the full Texas glory. There is also a newer barn with a bathroom, working pens for cattle, and plenty of fenced dry paddocks.

There is a main 6 bedroom / 6 bath luxury estate with a Texas sized fireplace and windows, a beautiful pool, and all the bells and whistles for entertaining. There is also a 3 bedroom house near the barns for ranch hands or guests.
