SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Isabell Werth & Don Johnson

The reigning queen of dressage was unbeatable aboard Don Johnson at the CDI Fritzens in Schindlhof, Austria. We’d like to think it was the “Bohemian Rhapsody” that really helped boost the score.

Isabell Werth of Germany is the world-ranked number one dressage rider, pretty much winning everything that’s not nailed down when she comes to town with her string of ethereal steeds. One thing that we love about Werth in particular is not just her winning ways, but her occasionally sassy choices in music for her Kur, or musical freestyle performances. How can you not like a lady that mixes a little Queen into her ride?

The only that would have made this one even better is if the entire performance was done to “Bohemian Rhapsody,” but in the conservative world of dressage, we suppose we’ll be happy to take what we can get. (And we always have Werth’s David Bowie ride to bring a sentimental tear to our eye.)

Werth and Don Johnson’s performance earned them a 82.675%, very nearly five full points over the second-place finishers, fellow German Fabienne Lütkemeier with a 77.825%. Don Johnson FRH is the world eighth-ranked horse, a 16 year old Hanoverian gelding.

For her overall performances at CDI Fritzens, Werth earned the Manfred & Hilde Swarovski Challenge Trophy for the second year running. The trophy, of course, is Swarovski crystal, and if an individual should win the trophy three times he or she may keep it for good. Maybe that’s in Werth’s future — time will tell!
