SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Richard Spooner & Cristallo Win Third Straight Nexen Derby
Only two other horse and rider combinations have ever accomplished this three-peat.
Derbies are hands-down one of the coolest events in show jumping: the courses are long, peppered with the usual expected fences as well as natural elements that truly test the mettle of a horse and rider combination. Spruce Meadows hosts one such event — the Nexen Derby, taking place in the famous International Ring to feature such tests as the bank, an open water and the Devil’s Dyke.
It’s impressive enough just to finish one of these courses — but three riders have now achieved the historic feat of winning three years in a row on the same horse. Richard Spooner and Cristallo are the newest additions to the ranks of Beezie Madden on Judgement and Ian Miller on Big Ben.
Cristallo is 19, but you wouldn’t guess it from watching highlights from this performance:
Did you catch that moment around 1:22? If anyone deserves a little post-ride treat, it’s Cristallo.
Our heartiest congratulations to Richard Spooner and Cristallo and all of their connections!
