‘Oh Crap’ Monday: Trailer Fire Edition

Typically on Mondays we share reader-submitted “oh crap” moments captured via photo or video. On weeks in which our readers are a bit bashful about sharing evidence of their “oh crap” moments in the saddle, we try to whet your appetite with some hair-raising moments from the professional horse world.

Few equine professionals cover more miles in a season than rodeo cowboys and cowgirls, and world champion barrel racer Lisa Lockhart recently had an unusual and terrifying “oh crap”moment of her own while hauling down the highway between rodeos. Here’s Lisa’s description of what’s happening in the video below:

Thank you to so many for the help, calls, and texts!! We are all safe!! Fire on rear wheel spread rapidly. I got 3 horses unloaded (2 got away & ran down the 4 lane toward Rapid), got the pickup unhooked, people stopped to help and pulled lots of my tack out, got the horses captured about 1/2 mile away (found in the middle of the highway!!!!!!), and it did not start the whole country on fire with the high wind!!! GOD IS GOOD, and he took care of me today!!!!!!

Yikes! We’re glad that no one — human or equine — was injured. Things like trailers and tack are valuable but they can be replaced; fortunately, all of the living souls on board are safe despite two horses attempting to escape from what we’re sure was a terrifying situation.
