SpectraVET Perf. of the Week: Scott Brash in Masters

The next time someone tells you it’s impossible to make money riding horses, introduce them to Scott Brash.

Spruce Meadows has this sort of “Field of Dreams” feel in my imagination: a massive grass Grand Prix ring that stretches to the horizon, bordered by grandstands and walked by living legends of the sport. This fantastical representation is only improved by the Masters experience, drawing the absolute best in show jumping at the end of each summer to contend for one of the biggest purses in the riding world.

Arguably, no one else in the world has more reason to revere Spruce Meadows than Great Britain’s Scott Brash: few can forget his unparalleled triumph last year in winning the Masters and therefore the Grand Slam of show jumping. And just to remind us all that he is in fact one of the best in the world at what he does, Brash won it again this past weekend, pocketing a comfy $1 million winner’s check for his efforts.

But it’s not all about the money: Brash made sure to honor his horse as well, Ursula XII. “She was second so many times in so many big grand prixs, but never actually won one, so she picked a good one to win. She went through two years of injuries, and to finally get her back to the top end of this sport and then win the biggest grand prix in the world, I am absolutely over the moon, for the horse especially.” (Read more from Brash at our sister site Jumper Nation.)

That’s how it’s done, folks. With this win under his belt, Brash is on his way towards another Grand Slam of show jumping — can he do it two years in a row? If anyone can, we’re betting it’s him.
