Thoroughbred Incentive Program Youth Ambassador of the Month: Gabriela Ortiz
The Thoroughbred Incentive Program proudly celebrates its young horse owners who are dedicated to the off-track Thoroughbred. Meet July’s selected T.I.P. Youth Ambassador!
Gabriela Ortiz (15, Texas) began riding when she was seven, taking lessons at a local ranch. She began with one lesson a week until she ended up leasing a horse where she could ride every day. She now has her own Thoroughbred, Cien Oles. Gabby and Cien Oles participate in the disciplines of Eventing and Dressage.
When asked her favorite thing about riding and her horse, Gabby described she likes the sense of freedom, peace and control all at the same time. “I feel that I can go to the end of the world with him…” Gabby said about Cien Oles, “…my favorite thing about him are his ears; they are so big that he looks like a huge donkey! He’s perfect”.
In addition to riding and competing with her Thoroughbred, Gabby also participates on her high school volleyball team and plays the violin in her high school orchestra. When she gets older Gabby aspires to become an Equine Veterinarian. Gabby cares for all animals – including her eight pets that consist of three horses, four dogs, and a guinea pig.
TIP: As one of our first youth ambassadors with the mission to represent our program and the Thoroughbred breed, what is one thing you would like to tell people about Thoroughbreds or the T.I.P.?
GO: I would like for people to know how Thoroughbreds deserve a second chance, just like people do. Thoroughbreds are so much more than race horses; they can be companions, eventers, jumpers, hunters and dressage horses. Thoroughbreds are under-represented and I feel that the Thoroughbred Incentive Program is helping them to get noticed, and given a chance to compete and demonstrate what they can do.

The Thoroughbred Incentive Program was created by The Jockey Club to encourage second careers for Thoroughbreds when their racing days are over. The T.I.P. sponsors Thoroughbred-only classes and high point awards as well as Performance Awards, special year-end awards specifically for Thoroughbreds. The T.I.P. also recognizes non-competing Thoroughbreds through its Young Rider program as well as a special award for Thoroughbreds in careers such as therapy horses or other non-profit outlets.
