Paris Olympic Happy Hour: Britain Secures Its First Gold Medal at the 2024 Paris Olympics

The Great Britain team repeats its Tokyo performance, securing the gold in the eventing team final

Cheers, Horse Nation! Each evening we’ll be pulling together the day’s top equestrian stories from Paris in one easy-to-read summary format. Think of us as your favorite sports bar rather than the long bar crawl from site to site to catch all the day’s equestrian news.

Disclaimer: As a western rider, I have found I lack any understanding of how eventing is scored so I depended highly on our sister site, Eventing Nation, while writing this recap. Note to self: I signed up for the wrong assignment! Anyway, here we go!

The eventing portion of the 2024 Paris Olympics has kept us on our toes! Today, Britain’s eventing team obtained the first gold medal for Great Britain, and defended their title, receiving their second consecutive eventing gold medal! Here’s a recap of how today’s competition went down.

After reviewing standings from dressage and cross country, it seems the cross country was the competition point that made or broke competitors. There was minimal shift between teams from yesterday to today.  Great Britain secured the jumping lead while France remained in second, and Japan held a steady third.

As for the individual results, Germany rider, Michael Jung on his horse Fischerchipmunk FRH, finished first without penalties. In second place for individual jumping was Austrailia’s Christopher Burton riding Shadow Man. He also completed the course without penalty. Laura Collett of Great Britain finished in the third position without penalty on London 52. At the conclusion of individual jumping, this moved Christopher Burton from third place yesterday to second place today and Laura Collett into the third place spot.

Team USA didn’t fair as well in the individual and team jumping rounds at the 2024 Paris Olympics. Finishing 10th in individual jumping was rider Boyd Martin on Fedarman B. Liz Halliday-Sharp finished in 19th on Cooley Nutcracker.

With the finishing of individual and team jumping, the eventing portion of the 2024 Paris Olympics came to an end. Here are the final results for both:
