Standing Ovation by Ovation Riding

Learn more about the newest CANTER affiliate in New York!

Every Friday, Horse Nation teams up with Ovation Riding to spotlight an individual or organization doing good work in the horse world. Today, we’re recognizing the newest affiliate of CANTER in New York!

CANTER, or the Communication Alliance to Network Thoroughbred Ex-Racehorses, recently added another affiliate to its network of programs across the country in New York. As a Phase I program, CANTER will provide free listings for local trainers and owners of Thoroughbreds that are no longer competing.

CANTER-NY is designed to complement the New York Thoroughbred Horsemen’s Association’s Take the Lead program, which provides listings for horses retiring who are still stabled at the track. CANTER’s program will provide listings for horses who have been moved to local farms and are seeking second careers.

Working in concert, both of these programs will assist horses from New York tracks in transitioning from the track to second career homes as sporthorses and pleasure mounts.

CANTER listings include photographs, descriptions, prices and contact information for the owner or trainer facilitating the horse’s purchase. At this time, CANTER-NY is not operating a full-service program in New York to rehabilitate and retrain racehorses.
