Fantasy Farm Thursday: Retire to Madden Mountain

A special edition of FFT that takes you behind the scenes at Beezie Madden’s New York farm: the ritziest retirement home in the world!

When the time comes for all of us to hang up the old hat and coat for the last time and ride into the retirement sunset, my solemn prayer is that all of us have it even half as good as the horses at Madden Mountain. As most show jumping fans know, husband and wife team John and Beezie Madden have been breeding, training, and competing the world’s very best show jumpers for decades out of their beautiful farm in Cazenovia, New York. What many don’t know is that they also retire their horses at their facility, to live out their golden years with freedom, comfort, and dignity.

In 2016, the team  at John Madden Sales broke ground on a new, incredible facility built exclusively with the retired champion in mind, and their VIP tenants include Beezie’s Olympic Gold Medalist partner Authentic, and many other wonder-pals from her career such as Cloud Nine, Coral Reef Via Volo, Prima, and Conquest II. They’re now also opening up the opportunity to retire horses outside the Madden family to the facility, but you might need to know a guy who knows a guy — spots for outside horses will mostly just be open to clients and friends.

So what comes with the golden life at Madden Madden?

“The barn was designed by John himself, as several people have mentioned, in the style of large operations in Europe. The goal was to offer excellent care and conditions for field horses, but in a way that is efficient for 1 or 2 experienced staff to oversee. This barn connects to 75+ acres of fields that are set up to be easily rotated for grazing for these horses in the spring through fall.”
