To those readers who responded to our weekly photo challenge with a “I don’t have burdocks where I live!”, don’t worry — because you’re really not missing out on a good time. Those of us who do live in a climate that embraces the tiny piece of hell-foliage that is the burdock, that little spiky seed ball that seems to proliferate by the thousands every time you turn your back no matter what kind of pasture management you employ, try to think of this period not as constant torture but as a rite of passage, the kind of rite of passage that leads us into the joys of winter.
