These riders make drill team look easy — even from the rider’s perspective!

Ever ridden in a drill team? If so, you know how challenging it can be to organize ten or twenty riders, let along at top speed. If not, then you’ll definitely want to watch this video. Whether or not you’re a seasoned drill rider, you’re gonna want to hang on to something.

I’ve seen my fair share of local-level drill performances, but a big team like this is another thing entirely. The stamina in the horses alone makes this performance impressive, but also the close quarters at high speed (would your horse put up with this?) Hats off to Kelly’s Team for making drill look easy!

From this perspective, it’s easy to see equestrian drill team’s roots in military exercises: the modern-day sport evolved directly from cavalry formations and battle commands, where strategic planning and skillful riding was literally a life-or-death situation. Today, drill performances are purely for entertainment and celebration.
