Tuesday Video From Dubarry: Former Jockey Gets Final Life Wish Granted
If the hourglass of your life was running out and you had one final wish, what would it be?
For 84-year-old Guenter Volkman, who is wheel-chair bound and on hospice care in Tucson, Arizona, it was a visit to a racetrack. On Feb. 8 the national nonprofit charitable organization Twilight Wish Foundation granted him his wish, taking him out for a day at Rillito Downs.
For Guenter, the sights and sounds of the racetrack brought back a flood of memory from his time working as a steeplechase jockey in Germany. Rillito Downs paid homage to his dedication to the sport by dedicating a race to him and honoring him in the winner’s circle.

The Twilight Wish Foundation’s mission: “Twilight Wish honors and acknowledges seniors for all they have given to others by bringing comfort and joy into their lives through individual wish granting celebrations. Twilight Wish grants wishes to deserving elderly, age 68 and older, who earn less than 200% of poverty level annually, or who live in a nursing facility. By treating the elderly with compassion, we restore their dignity and bring them hope.”
