An Unusual Patient at the ECB Equine Spa
What’s good for the goose is good for the gander…and what’s good for the horse is good for the camel???
This week an equine aquatherapy center in the UK’s Gloucestershire county had a rather unique patient…Kokoso the one-hump camel from Joseph’s Amazing Camels, the only camel rental business in the U.K. (surprising, I know). Ordinarily ECB Equine’s spas are used for performance horses, including eventer Zara Phillips’ horses, but as it turns out, cold saltwater is just as good for drawing out heat and swelling in camels as it is for horses. And since camels are bad kickers, cold-hosing or applying a poultice isn’t a simple undertaking…hence Kokoso’s spa aquatherapy treatment.
The ECB Equine Spa headquarters had never treated a camel before, but owner Sarah Branston said, “I was really fearful, as you’ve got to be very careful with them, but he’s been fabulous. He’s a lovely animal and just walks straight in.”
That’s all well and good. But what surprised me the most about this heartwarming story was where Kokoso came from. Not only is Joseph’s Amazing Camels the only place to rent a herd of camels in the U.K.–but their camels play polo. Camel polo is a thing, guys.
Awesome.
Go Riding. (And if you ride a camel in a polo match, tell us about it!)
