So… um… hmmm. A hermaphrodite horse, perhaps?
Many thanks to readers Presley, Josie, Melissa and Day for sending this one our way. I’m guessing this is just a case of some owner who mistakenly believes that a “stallion” is a breed, but while we’re on the subject of equine sex ed did you know that hermaphroditic and intersex horses do exist?
Kenneth Marcella, DVM explains in an article for veterinarynews.dvm360.com, “When a horse displays, either fully or partially, characteristics of both sexes it is called an ‘intersex.’ If both testicles and ovaries are present that individual is called a ‘true hermaphrodite.’ These individuals are not very common.”
But they’re out there. Here’s a case from 2012 in which an Australian harness racing mare was restricted to racing against the boys after she was found to be a hermaphrodite:
