SpectraVET Performance of the Week: Sapphire, 1995-2014
The show jumping world lost a legend this week in Sapphire, McLain Ward’s superstar mare who was a cornerstone of the U.S. team for many years.

Sapphire sadly passed away on Sunday following complications from colic. The USEF Hall of Fame show jumper enjoyed a long and successful career, helping the U.S. capture Team Gold at the 2004 and 2008 Olympic Games and Team Silver at the 2006 FEI World Equestrian Games. She was retired from competition in 2012 and inducted into the USEF Horse Stars Hall of Fame in 2013.
Our thoughts and prayers are with McLain and all those whose lives were touched by this phenomenal athlete. Let’s honor Sapphire by remembering one of her great performances at the 2010 World Equestrian Games in Lexington, where they earned a hero’s cheer after posting the second fastest speed round:
Go Sapphire.
