Derby Fever: Gemologist

In the past 10 years, three undefeated horses–Smarty Jones (2004), Barbaro (2006) and Big Brown (2008)–have won the Kentucky Derby. Could Gemologist be the fourth?

The Todd Pletcher-trained son of Tiznow has impressively won his first five starts, including his most recent victory over fellow Derby contender Alpha in the Wood Memorial (G1).

It was an exciting finish: Alpha rallied down the stretch, and Gemologist had to dig deep to fend him off, ultimately winning by a neck. Gemologist’s clearly got grit–not to mention the same trainer-owner team behind the 2010 Derby winner, Super Saver–but will it be enough come the first Saturday in May?
